About COMP files
A .COMP file usually falls into one of two distinct categories: a Pokémon Sword/Shield game data file or a Blackmagic Fusion visual effects composition.
For gamers, a .COMP file is typically a compressed data or save archive associated with Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield on the Nintendo Switch. These files often contain encrypted game states, player progress, or boxed Pokémon data. The frustrating part for users is that .COMP files are not standard media files; you cannot simply double-click to "open" them on a PC. They function as proprietary containers readable only by the game engine or specialized save editing tools like PKHeX. Converting this file typically means extracting its contents into viewable formats (like JSON for data or PNG for texture assets) or re-injecting it into a console via homebrew tools.
For video editors and VFX artists, the .COMP extension represents a composition file created in Blackmagic Design Fusion or the Fusion page of DaVinci Resolve. Unlike a video file (MP4 or MOV), a .COMP file is a "recipe" - a text-based set of instructions (node tree) that tells the software how to generate the visual effect. It does not contain the actual rendered video frames, which is why standard media players cannot play it. To "convert" a Fusion .COMP file, you must open it in DaVinci Resolve and render the project to a deliverable format like ProRes, H.264 (MP4), or an image sequence (EXR, TIFF) for final playback.
Convert.Guru analyzes your COMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert COMP file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use DaVinci Resolve or similar software from the "Game Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to COMP, try DaVinci Resolve or another comparable tool in the "Game Data Storage" category.
The COMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our COMP converter.
