About COMP files

The .COMP file extension is primarily used for two distinct purposes: proprietary Pokémon Sword and Shield game data files, and visual effects node trees known as Fusion Composition Files.

To interact with Pokémon save data, users typically rely on console modding tools or save editors like PKHeX, while composition files are natively created and opened using Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve or the standalone Blackmagic Fusion compositing software.

Users often attempt to convert these files to bypass software restrictions. Gamers want to extract .COMP data to backup or migrate progress, but these files are proprietary Nintendo Switch data, making them difficult to parse outside of emulators. Video editors face severe workflow bottlenecks because .COMP files contain proprietary node parameters that are completely incompatible with competing VFX tools like Adobe After Effects.

For best results, Fusion .COMP files can be converted to TXT or JSON because they are fundamentally plain-text scripts containing node coordinates. Pokémon game data cannot be conventionally converted, but raw data extraction is occasionally possible.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it stores specific, localized parameters rather than standardized media. Standard online converters fail because they lack the engines to render complex VFX node trees or decrypt console saves. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your COMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WICDEMO, ESS and GME files.

The COMP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our COMP converter.
