About CMT files
The .CMT file extension is a highly fragmented format primarily used to store supplementary project data. Common uses include camera motion data for the Capcom MT Framework game engine, source code comments in Microsoft Visual C++, and PLC variable comments in industrial controllers like Siemens SIMATIC S7 or Fuji Electric MICREX. Because different applications use the exact same extension for completely different data types, the structure of a .CMT file varies wildly. Depending on the originating software, it might be plain text encoded in UTF-16 (LE), a comma-separated list of customer data, or a proprietary binary structure like the Microsoft Compound format used by Cadwork 3D CAD/CAM.
The main disadvantage of the .CMT format is this complete lack of standardization. You cannot reliably open it in standard text editors or data viewers without knowing its specific origin. If the file is a binary game asset or a CAD project comment file, opening it in a standard editor like Notepad will only display unreadable garbage characters. Furthermore, these files are heavily dependent on their parent software and are often useless if separated from their main project directory.
To make this data accessible across different systems or easily readable by humans, conversion is necessary. For text-based PLC or code .CMT files, convert them to standard TXT or CSV to review the data in Microsoft Excel. For web or database integration, convert to XML or JSON.
