About CML files
The .CML file extension primarily denotes a Chemical Markup Language file. This is an open, XML-based standard used by chemists and researchers to manage and exchange molecular structures, spectra, and analytical data. Alternatively, .CML is used for CAD/CAM software license files by 3D Systems Cimatron, memory loader files for Schneider Electric PLCs, and even event logs for Technicolor cable modems. Specialized scientific software like Jmol, ACD/3D Viewer, and ChemDraw natively parse standard chemistry .CML files. Sharing .CML files with non-chemists is a major hurdle. The format is highly domain-specific, and without specialized chemistry software, the recipient only sees dense, unformatted XML code. For alternative proprietary types like CAD licenses or modem logs, the data is strictly tied to specific hardware and cannot be easily manipulated. Converting .CML to SDF, MOL, or PDB makes the molecular data compatible with older chemical simulation tools. For visual sharing in presentations or reports, converting the rendered molecule directly to a PDF or PNG image is highly recommended. Many secondary .CML types, such as hardware licenses or CryptoMailer encrypted archives, are closed, proprietary formats. Standard online converters fail on these files because they lack the specific parsing logic or decryption keys required.
