About CLW files
The .CLW extension primarily refers to the Clustal Multiple Sequence Alignment format, a text-based standard used in bioinformatics to display aligned DNA, RNA, or protein sequences. These files are typically generated by alignment software like Clustal Omega or MUSCLE. While .CLW files are technically plain text, they rely on strict spacing and headers that can easily be broken if edited in standard processors like Word. Researchers often struggle with .CLW files because many modern analysis pipelines prefer the simpler FASTA format, and the fixed-width text is difficult to include in publication manuscripts without formatting errors. For analysis, the best practice is to convert these files to FASTA or .PHYLIP. For publishing or sharing results with colleagues who lack specialized viewers, converting to PDF ensures the alignment remains visually intact.
A secondary, legacy use case is the Visual C++ ClassWizard file by Microsoft. These files store metadata about class structures in older C++ projects. They often become corrupted or bloated, leading to friction in the development environment; however, they can typically be deleted and automatically regenerated by the IDE.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CLW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CLW file to JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP, RB, GO, RS or SWIFT, you can use Clustal Omega or similar software from the "Bioinformatics Sequence Alignment" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to CLW, try Clustal Omega or another comparable tool in the "Bioinformatics Sequence Alignment" category.
The CLW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CLW converter.
