About CLPI files
A .CLPI file is a Blu-ray Clip Information file, a critical binary component found within the BDMV/CLIPINF directory of Blu-ray discs and AVCHD structures. These files do not contain actual video or audio data; instead, they serve as the navigation map for the corresponding M2TS stream files. They store technical metadata, including Program Clock References (PCR), packet locations, and time-to-byte mappings that allow hardware players to perform seeking, fast-forwarding, and chapter skipping.
The primary frustration users face with .CLPI files is the misconception that they are playable video files. Because they reside next to video streams, users often attempt to open them in media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player, only to encounter error messages or a blank screen. Furthermore, .CLPI files are proprietary binary files, meaning you cannot view their contents with a standard text editor. They are strictly tied to the Blu-ray directory structure; moving a .CLPI file without its associated M2TS and MPLS (playlist) files renders it useless.
For technical analysis, archiving, or debugging Blu-ray structures, the best workflow is to convert .CLPI data into readable formats like XML, JSON, or TXT. This exposes the internal stream attributes and cut-points without requiring hex editors. If your goal is to watch the video content, you must locate the much larger M2TS file in the STREAM folder and convert that to MP4 or MKV for universal compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CLPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CLPI file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use PowerDVD or similar software from the "Blu-ray Stream Metadata" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to CLPI, try PowerDVD or another comparable tool in the "Blu-ray Stream Metadata" category.
The CLPI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CLPI converter.
