About CLIPS files

A .clips file primarily functions as a character animation file for The Banner Saga, an RPG developed by Stoic Studio. These files contain structural animation data compressed using the zlib algorithm. Additionally, the .clips extension is used by Panic Coda, a discontinued macOS web development editor, to store reusable code snippets. Sometimes, the extension may also relate to scripts for the CLIPS expert system rule engine.

Opening and editing these files is highly restrictive. Game animation .clips files are proprietary binary formats tied directly to their specific game engine. They cannot be opened in standard animation software like Adobe After Effects or Blender. They do not hold video frames, but rather custom skeleton and texture mapping data. Standard online converters fail to process them because they lack the highly specific parsers required to interpret this closed data structure. Coda snippet files face similar accessibility issues because they are locked to an obsolete macOS application.

Converting a .clips game file to standard video formats like MP4 or GIF directly is impossible without specialized game modding tools. If extracting the data is strictly necessary, converting the unpacked zlib stream to structured formats like JSON or XML is the best target for developers, though visual data will be lost.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format designed only for direct software consumption, not user editing. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our analyzer can inspect the file, detect the underlying zlib compression or plain text, and show internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extracting data may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CLIPS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
