About CL4 files

A .cl4 file is primarily a legacy CD Layout Project File used by Roxio Easy CD Creator or a ripping session database used by Easy CD-DA Extractor. Roxio Easy CD Creator manages the layout files using a Microsoft Compound structure, while the CD-DA Extractor relies on standard SQLite. These formats present major archiving challenges because they are proprietary or deeply obsolete. They tie users to legacy software from the early 2000s and, cruelly, the Roxio variant only contains file paths rather than the actual media files, rendering the project useless if the source media is moved. The best target format for the CD-DA database variant is CSV or SQL. For Roxio layout files, direct conversion to a modern ISO is impossible without the original media files, so plain text extraction is the most pragmatic goal. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary container. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the layout data.
