About CA1 files

The .ca1 file extension is primarily associated with legacy 3D Home Architect projects (originally by Broderbund, now part of Chief Architect). These files contain architectural floor plans, 3D home models, and interior design layouts created in older versions of home design software. A major catch for users is proprietary lock-in: modern versions of Chief Architect Premier (X8 and later) often drop support for these legacy file formats (pre-version 10 or 3D Home Architect 4.0), making them impossible to open without intermediate conversion steps or outdated software.

Alternatively, a .ca1 file may be a CALS Type 1 Raster Image. These are high-resolution, 1-bit (black and white) bitmap images originally developed by the US Department of Defense for digitizing technical manuals and engineering drawings. While efficient for storage, they are not supported by standard web browsers or default image viewers like Windows Photos.

The CA1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CA1 converter.
