The .CA1 file extension is primarily a 3D Home Architect project file. It stores residential floor plans, 3D structural models, textures, and architectural data. Originally developed by the now-defunct Broderbund Software, the underlying technology eventually transitioned into Chief Architect. Secondary uses for the .CA1 extension include CALS Type 1 raster images, a legacy monochrome graphic standard developed by the US Department of Defense, and structural analysis model files for MIDAS Civil software.
The biggest disadvantage of a 3D .CA1 file is its heavily proprietary, closed nature. You cannot open a .CA1 architectural project in modern web browsers or standard CAD tools like AutoCAD without the original software. Users often need to view these designs on mobile devices or share them with contractors who do not own an expensive Chief Architect license.
For collaboration, the best target formats are PDF for 2D floor plans, or DWG, DXF, and OBJ for transferring the 3D models into other CAD applications. If your file is a CALS Type 1 image, converting it to a modern PNG or JPG is necessary for web compatibility.
