About C4Z files
A .C4Z file is a packed device driver used by Control4 home automation systems to interface with hardware like televisions, lights, and thermostats. Unlike the older, text-based .C4I format, the C4Z format is essentially a renamed ZIP archive. This containerization allows the driver to bundle Lua scripts, graphical icons, and documentation alongside the core XML configuration.
The primary difficulty for integrators and DIY enthusiasts is that .C4Z files are not recognized by standard operating systems as archives. To view the code or documentation inside, users typically need the proprietary (and often dealer-restricted) Control4 Composer Pro software. Additionally, because the file acts as a "black box," troubleshooting driver logic or extracting specific IR codes is difficult without unpacking it.
For inspection and editing, the most practical workflow is converting - or simply renaming - the file to ZIP. This allows you to extract the contents using standard tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR. Inside, you will typically find a driver.xml file (the schema), .lua files (the logic), and image resources. If you need to revert to a format compatible with older Control4 OS versions (2.5 and earlier), you generally cannot "convert" a C4Z back to .C4I without losing the functionality provided by the Lua scripts and embedded images.
Convert.Guru analyzes your C4Z file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert C4Z file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Composer Pro or similar software from the "Home Automation Driver" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to C4Z, try Composer Pro or another comparable tool in the "Home Automation Driver" category.
The C4Z Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our C4Z converter.
