To convert other file formats to the "Game Data Archive" file type, you need software like BZFlag or a similar tool.
About BZF files
The .BZF extension acts as a container for several distinct, incompatible formats, creating significant confusion for users. The most common variant (47%) is a game data file for the open-source tank game BZFlag, typically containing world maps, zone definitions, or capture-the-flag settings. These files are proprietary and useless without the game client. A secondary but critical use case (11%) involves Boardmaker by Tobii Dynavox, where the file is actually a GZIP compressed archive containing educational activity boards. Users often struggle because they cannot open these files without expensive assistive software subscriptions. Additionally, .BZF files serve as compressed game archives for the GRIN engine (used in titles like BeamNG.drive) or legacy BioWare games like Baldur's Gate.
For Boardmaker files, the most practical workaround is to rename the extension to ZIP or GZ to extract the internal media and XML data without the original software. For BZFlag maps, conversion is limited to using the game's internal editor to export text-based data. For archiving or sharing Boardmaker content, converting the extracted views to PDF is the standard for print-ready classroom materials.

The BZF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BZF converter.
