About BWM files

The .BWM extension primarily identifies the Black & White Model format, a proprietary 3D asset type developed by Lionhead Studios for the classic god game Black & White (2001). These binary files store geometry, texture coordinates, and morph target data required for the game's dynamic creature growth and terrain rendering systems. Because the format was custom-built for the proprietary engine used by Peter Molyneux's team, it is effectively a "black box" to modern standard tools; you cannot simply open a .BWM file in Blender or Autodesk Maya without specialized import scripts or legacy converters like the Black & White Magic Editor.

A secondary, less common use of the extension is for Brainwave 2 game music files. In this context, the file functions as a specialized MIDI container, storing musical note and timing data used by the Brainwave 2 engine. Users typically need to convert these files to extract assets for archiving, modding, or playback on modern devices. For 3D models, the goal is conversion to OBJ or STL for editing and 3D printing. For audio variants, users generally convert to standard MID or MP3 to bypass the obsolete game interface.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BWM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BXI, BJK and BFI files.

The BWM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BWM converter.
