About BFI files

.BFI files are full-motion video (FMV) containers specifically designed by Tsunami Media, Inc. in the early 1990s. They were used exclusively for storing video cutscenes in interactive MS-DOS and Windows games like Blue Force and Flash Traffic: City of Angels.

Originally, these proprietary files were played natively by the game's own executable. Today, the open-source multimedia framework FFmpeg and VLC Media Player are the primary tools capable of decoding the archaic video and audio streams.

The major disadvantage of the .BFI format is its extreme obsolescence. It relies on a closed, 8-bit palettized compression scheme that modern operating systems, web browsers, and smart devices cannot recognize. The files typically feature very low resolutions and outdated audio interleaving. Attempting to open them natively on a modern PC will result in an unrecognized format error, and you cannot upload them to platforms like YouTube.

To make these retro videos watchable, you must convert them to widely supported formats like MP4 (H.264), AVI, or MKV. Converting to MP4 ensures the files will play effortlessly on smartphones and modern media players, though the original low-resolution, pixelated quality cannot be artificially improved.

Because this file format is difficult to open and highly proprietary, standard online converters frequently fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it if the underlying streams are supported.
