The .BUT file extension serves multiple distinct purposes. Primarily, it functions either as a plain-text launch script for Minecraft Java Edition servers, a highly proprietary data extract from the Dutch Police BVH (Basisvoorziening Handhaving) system, or a UI button asset for the video game Police Simulator 18.
The Minecraft variant is simply an execution script containing Java memory allocation commands. The disadvantage of using the custom .BUT extension here is that native operating systems like Windows or Linux will not recognize it as an executable batch file or shell script. Users must convert or rename these files to standard BAT or SH formats to actually run their servers.
Conversely, the Dutch Police BVH data extract is a closed, proprietary database dump. It is undocumented and strictly localized for internal government network transfers. Standard online converters fail to process this type of .BUT file because they lack access to the specialized schema required to parse the records.
