About BUT files
The .but file extension is a rare and often ambiguous format associated with three distinct environments: internal police systems, game server management, and simulation software configuration.
1. Dutch Police BVH Data Extract (Primary Use)
Approximately 26% of .but files originate from the Dutch Police BVH system (Basisvoorziening Handhaving). These are Police data extract files containing incident reports, administrative records, or enforcement data.
Constraints: This format is strictly proprietary. It is not designed for public viewing and typically requires authorized credentials and specific internal software to interpret the structured data.
Conversion: There is no public converter. Users holding this file without authorization cannot open it. Authorized personnel likely use an internal export tool to convert these to CSV or PDF.
2. Minecraft Server Launch Script
A significant portion (15%) of .but files are found in Minecraft server directories. These are often renamed batch files or shell scripts used to execute server startup commands (e.g., allocating RAM, selecting the JAR file).
Why .BUT?: This is frequently a typo for BAT (Windows Batch) or a specific naming convention used by custom server wrappers/modpacks.
Conversion: Since these are plain text files, the best "conversion" is to open them in a code editor like Notepad++ to view the commands. You can then save them as TXT for reference or rename them to BAT to make them executable on Windows.
3. Police Simulator 18 Button Configuration
In the context of Police Simulator 18, a .but file acts as a Button file, storing controller or keyboard mapping configurations. These allow the game to persist user preferences for vehicle controls and character movement.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BUT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BUT file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use Minecraft or similar software from the "Police Data Extract" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to BUT, try Minecraft or another comparable tool in the "Police Data Extract" category.
The BUT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BUT converter.
