About BSS files
The .BSS file is a proprietary graphics archive used by classic PlayStation 1 Resident Evil games. It stores 2D pre-rendered background images. A single file typically holds multiple camera angles for the same in-game room.
They are generally extracted and modified using specialized fan-made modding software, such as Reevengi or BSS Manager (BSSM).
Because it is highly proprietary, the .BSS format has severe disadvantages for everyday use. It is not a standard image file. Instead, it acts as an archive of compressed images aligned on 32KB or 64KB boundaries. The internal graphics are compressed specifically for the PS1's MDEC video decoding chip. This means you cannot open it natively in Windows or standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop.
You must extract the archive to edit or view the backgrounds. Once extracted, converting the internal graphics to PNG or JPG is best for viewing and sharing. Note that you will lose the specific hardware compression needed to re-insert them into the game engine.
Standard online converters fail to process this format because they lack the specific PS1 MDEC decompression libraries.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BSS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BSS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSS converter.
