About BRRES files
The .BRRES file format is a proprietary Wii Game Resource Archive created by Nintendo. These files are primarily used in classic Nintendo Wii games, such as Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, to package 3D models (MDL0), textures (TEX0), skeletal animations (CHR0), and scene data. Because it acts as a container, a single .BRRES file usually holds multiple embedded sub-files required to render a character, item, or race track.
To open or modify these files, modders and game preservationists rely on specialized, community-built software like BrawlBox or BRRES Viewer.
Users typically need to convert or extract .BRRES files when they want to rip 3D models for fan art, 3D printing, or porting assets into modern game engines. However, the format's major disadvantage is its strictly closed, proprietary nature. Standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot natively read Wii-specific binary structures. Furthermore, opening these files in standard archive tools like ZIP or RAR extractors will fail because they rely on custom Nintendo header formats and occasionally proprietary compression.
For conversion, the best targets are DAE (Collada) or OBJ for the 3D models, and PNG for the textures. Be aware that exporting to OBJ will completely strip out rigging, skeletal data, and animations, making DAE the superior target format if you need to keep the 3D skeleton intact.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard web-based converters do not parse obscure, console-specific game engine data. Often, only reverse-engineered community tools can properly read or export the geometry. If our analysis detects supported underlying or embedded image files, viewing or extracting those basic assets may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BRRES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BRRES file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use BrawlBox or similar software from the "Wii Game Resource Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to BRRES, try BrawlBox or another comparable tool in the "Wii Game Resource Archive" category.
The BRRES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BRRES converter.
