About BRM files
The .BRM file extension is most frequently associated with brModelo, a legacy open-source tool widely used in computer science education for creating Entity-Relationship (ER) database diagrams. These files store the conceptual schema of a database - tables, keys, and relationships - in a proprietary XML-based format.
A major limitation for users is that .BRM files are strictly locked to the brModelo environment (often a standalone .jar executable requiring Java). They cannot be opened in web browsers, standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos, or professional modeling tools like Microsoft Visio. This makes sharing diagrams with clients or professors difficult without first converting them. Users typically need to convert these models into PDF for documentation, PNG/JPEG for presentations, or SQL scripts (.sql) to physically generate the database in systems like MySQL or PostgreSQL.
A secondary, distinct use case is the Neo Geo memory card file (often named cart.brm). Used by emulators like MAME and NeoRAGEx, these files act as virtual memory cards, storing save states and high scores for classic arcade games. These binary files are often exactly 128KB and are not meant to be opened but rather placed in specific save or nvram directories. Attempting to open them in a text editor results in illegible gibberish.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BRM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BRV, BRM3, IDB and JET files.
The BRM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BRM converter.
