About BPW files

A .bpw file is a Bitmap World File, a plain text sidecar format used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to provide georeferencing data for a corresponding BMP raster image. Developed to work alongside software like ArcGIS Pro and QGIS, the file contains six lines of coordinate data defining the scale, rotation, and real-world location of the map image.

A common source of confusion is that users attempt to open .bpw files as images. However, the file is strictly textual metadata; it contains no visual data itself. Without the accompanying BMP file sharing the exact same filename, the .bpw is functionally useless for visualization. Furthermore, BMP files are uncompressed and large, making them poor candidates for web sharing. For better portability and compatibility, users typically convert the format pair into a GeoTIFF (which embeds the coordinates) or convert the text data to TXT for manual editing. Archival workflows often involve converting the map view to PDF or standard JPG formats to reduce file size while sacrificing the geospatial precision.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BPW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIP, TFW and SBN files.
