About BOOTSKIN files

A .bootskin file is a custom boot screen theme used by the legacy Stardock BootSkin application. Popular during the Windows 2000 and Windows XP eras, these files allowed users to safely change the Windows startup graphic without modifying the core Windows kernel executable (ntoskrnl.exe).

The main disadvantage of the .bootskin format today is that it is completely obsolete. Modern operating systems utilizing UEFI and Secure Boot do not support these legacy modifications. To a standard user, a .bootskin file appears as a proprietary, unreadable format that requires a dead software ecosystem. Standard online converters will fail to process it because they do not recognize the custom extension.

However, a .bootskin file is simply a standard ZIP archive in disguise. Inside this archive, you will find a 16-color BMP background image, a smaller BMP file for the loading progress bar, and an INI configuration file that defines screen coordinates and colors.

To rescue the graphics trapped inside, you must extract the internal contents. Converting the extracted BMP images to modern web formats like PNG or JPG is the best target. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Since our analysis detects the supported underlying ZIP format, convert.guru can easily bypass the proprietary extension, allowing you to access and convert the embedded retro graphics.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BOOTSKIN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BMP, JPG, SUITE, WB4 and DXPACK files.
