A .bootskin file is a custom boot screen theme used by the legacy Stardock BootSkin application. Popular during the Windows 2000 and Windows XP eras, these files allowed users to safely change the Windows startup graphic without modifying the core Windows kernel executable (ntoskrnl.exe).
The main disadvantage of the .bootskin format today is that it is completely obsolete. Modern operating systems utilizing UEFI and Secure Boot do not support these legacy modifications.
