Convert BONE to another file type
To convert BONE animations to another format, you need jPCT 3D Engine or other 3D software.
Convert a file to BONE
To convert other file formats to the "Skeletal Rigging File" file type, you need software like jPCT 3D Engine or a similar tool.
About BONE files
A .BONE file stores the skeletal rigging and animation hierarchy used to animate 3D models. It acts as the digital skeleton for 3D characters, defining how meshes deform and move. These files are most commonly associated with the Bones library by r a f t for the jPCT 3D engine, or found as extracted game assets from titles like World of Warcraft. The primary disadvantage of the .BONE format is its proprietary, engine-specific nature. Because it is compiled as specialized 3D data for a specific game or rendering engine, mainstream 3D software like Autodesk Maya or Blender cannot open it natively without add-ons. The rigging data is effectively locked inside the file, making it incredibly frustrating if you need to edit the animation or reuse the character in a different project. To make the skeleton usable, you must convert the .BONE file to universal 3D formats like FBX, DAE, or GLTF. These targets preserve the complex bone hierarchy and weight painting. Avoid converting to OBJ, as it will completely strip the animation and leave you with a static, lifeless mesh. Standard online converters fail with .BONE files because parsing proprietary skeletal matrices requires specialized engine knowledge.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BONE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BONE file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use jPCT 3D Engine or similar software from the "3D Skeletal Animation Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to BONE, try jPCT 3D Engine or another comparable tool in the "3D Skeletal Animation Data" category.
The BONE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BONE converter.
