About BNT files

.BNT files serve several completely distinct purposes, depending on the software that created them. Primarily, they are used as Binary Nintendo Texture files for 3D assets in Nintendo console games (such as on the Switch or DSi). Alternatively, they function as proprietary Apparel Pattern Design files in CAD/CAM software like Lectra Modaris or Bonatech, storing complex 2D clothing patterns. Lastly, Nemetschek Allplan uses the .BNT extension for CAD project backups.

Users often need to convert these files because they are incredibly restrictive. Nintendo's game textures are highly compressed, console-specific, and completely incompatible with standard image viewers. Similarly, the apparel patterns require expensive, specialized software (costing thousands of dollars in licensing) just to view a digital garment blueprint. You cannot simply open these files in a web browser or send them to a standard printer.

For Nintendo textures, the most practical target formats are PNG or DDS to make the image data editable on a PC. For CAD apparel patterns, converting to DXF or PDF is strictly required for sharing designs with manufacturers or standard plotters, though you may lose proprietary layering or specific machine-cutting instructions.

Opening or converting .BNT files is notoriously difficult because they are closed, proprietary formats without publicly documented specifications. Standard online image converters fail instantly because they do not recognize the custom binary headers used by Nintendo or Lectra.

However, you can still use convert.guru. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. For example, since the Allplan CAD backup .BNT file is actually a standard ZIP file under the hood, our analysis detects this embedded format automatically, allowing you to instantly extract the contents without needing the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BNT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MODS, A64 and FSSD files.

The BNT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BNT converter.
