About BMM files

A .bmm file is primarily a proprietary LED display project file created by software like PowerLED (specifically versions for TF-series controllers) or LED Matrix Studio. These files contain the configuration data, pixel-mapped bitmaps, text patterns, and timing sequences required to program scrolling LED matrix signs often seen in storefronts and industrial displays.

Users typically encounter .bmm files on USB drives used to update these signs and face a common difficulty: the file is a hardware-specific binary blob that cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Adobe Photoshop. Unlike standard BMP images, a .bmm file maps data directly to the memory blocks of the LED controller card. To view or convert the content, you must use the original authoring software (e.g., PowerLED LTS) to render the project and then export the frames as standard JPG or GIF animations. For engineering users, .bmm may also refer to a Block Memory Map file used in AMD Xilinx FPGA workflows, though this is less common in consumer contexts.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BMM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMM converter.
