About AZZ files

The .AZZ file extension represents a proprietary database format used by AZZ Cardfile, a Personal Information Manager (PIM) for Windows designed to replace the legacy Windows Cardfile. These files function as digital index cards, storing unstructured data like addresses, notes, recipes, and phone numbers in a free-form manner. While efficient for personal organization on a Windows PC, the .AZZ format can be a hassle for modern workflows: it is not natively supported by macOS, Linux, or mobile operating systems, and it locks valuable data into a desktop-only environment. Technically, modern .AZZ files are ZIP containers holding the database structure and content, often including Rich Text Format (RTF) data. However, simply renaming the file to ZIP and extracting it rarely yields a usable result, as the internal structure requires the original software's logic to interpret relationships and indices. To migrate this data to modern tools like Microsoft Excel, Google Contacts, or Evernote, users must convert the database into interoperable formats. For spreadsheet manipulation, converting to CSV is ideal. For preserving text formatting and images, RTF or DOCX is recommended.
