The .AWE extension primarily functions as a Wwise Encoded Audio Bank, a proprietary container format developed by Audiokinetic for interactive game audio. Unlike standard audio files, these banks are heavily optimized for runtime performance in engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, often containing interleaved header data and compressed audio streams that standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot decode. Users typically encounter these files when attempting to extract music or sound effects ('game ripping') from game assets.
