About ASK files

The .ASK file extension primarily represents an Ableton Live Skin file or a legacy askSam Database. Ableton skins are used by Ableton Live to change the visual theme and color palette of the digital audio workstation. Structurally, these are internal XML files containing specific hex color values. The other common use is the askSam database format, built by askSam Systems for free-form text storage and legacy document management.

Both formats present distinct user challenges. The askSam format is a proprietary, closed system from a defunct company. These files cannot be opened by modern spreadsheet or database tools natively, meaning users face severe vendor lock-in and often struggle to access their own historical data. Ableton skins are strictly bound to the DAW. They are not supported by web browsers or standard image viewers because they contain raw configuration code, not actual image data.

If you need to recover data from an askSam .ASK file, extracting the text to a universal format like CSV, RTF, or TXT is the best conversion target, though native search indexing will be lost. For Ableton skins, converting the file to XML or TXT allows you to edit the raw hex codes directly outside the application.

Standard online converters usually fail to process these files. Ableton skins are application-specific settings, while askSam is an undocumented legacy format. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The ASK Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ASK converter.
