The .ZPW file format is overwhelmingly (92%) used as a waveform peak cache file by audio production software like Ableton Live, which utilizes Zplane Development audio libraries. When you import an audio file into a digital audio workstation, the software generates a .ZPW file alongside it to store the visual representation of the sound wave. A secondary, rarer use (6%) is for ultrasonic testing data generated by ZBL NDT equipment using ZBLSONICV2.10 software.
A major disadvantage of the .ZPW format is that users frequently mistake it for an actual audio file. It contains zero playable audio data. Because they only hold low-resolution visual rendering coordinates to speed up project loading times, they are entirely useless on their own. You cannot open them in a standard media player, and they do not store original sound frequencies. The ultrasonic data variants are similarly restricted, as they are highly proprietary and closed-source.
