About APD files

The .APD extension is a distinct "collision format" utilized by three completely unrelated industries, creating significant confusion for users. The most statistically probable file (13%) is Pedcad Pressure Data, generated by pedcad software for orthopedic measurement and insole manufacturing. These are specialized binary files containing 2D/3D foot scan data, often required by CNC mills or medical archivists.

The second common variant (11%) is an arcplan Document, an XML-based Business Intelligence report used by the legacy arcplan Enterprise suite (now Insightsoftware). These files define complex data visualizations and server connectivity settings.

A third, consumer-facing variant (0.9%) is the ACDSee Photo Document, a layered image project file from ACDSee Photo Studio that saves non-destructive edits.

Common Friction Points:
Users typically encounter .APD files when trying to retrieve legacy data or medical records. The primary constraint is proprietary lock-in: Pedcad files cannot be viewed in standard CAD tools, and arcplan files are unreadable without a licensed enterprise server environment. ACDSee files act like PSD files; they are useless outside their native editor.
