The .AO file extension is most commonly an XML-based DAISY book authorization file. It is used by the DAISY Consortium to manage access rights and digital playback permissions for specialized digital talking books. Secondary uses for the .AO extension include secure document database files for GP Software AlfaOffice (often referred to as Agenda One documents) and outline data files for Green Parrots ActionOutline.
Users frequently encounter limits with .AO files because they are highly specialized and often proprietary. The DAISY authorization file enforces access control, making it impossible to read the associated e-book without the correct credentials and a dedicated player.
