About ANY files
A .ANY file is a proprietary project file created by AnyRail, the industry-standard software for designing model railroad layouts. These files store intricate vector-based data, including track geometry from manufacturers like Hornby, Peco, and Märklin, along with layers for scenery, wiring, and structures. The primary disadvantage of the .ANY format is its lack of portability; it is strictly a project source file, not an image. You cannot open it in web browsers, standard image viewers, or mobile devices, and AnyRail is natively Windows-only. This is a common source of problems when sharing layouts with friends or printing plans at a copy shop that doesn't have the software installed. Furthermore, the free trial version of AnyRail has object limits that may prevent you from saving or exporting complex files sent to you by others. To overcome this, users typically convert .ANY files to PDF for 1:1 scale printing (useful for track laying templates), JPG/PNG for sharing on hobbyist forums, or DXF for further engineering in CAD programs like AutoCAD.
