Extract text from ALV files
To convert your ALV file to another format, you need Adobe Photoshop or other Settings software.
To convert other file formats to the "Color Correction Preset" file type, you need software like Adobe Photoshop or a similar tool.
The .ALV extension usually signifies an Adobe Photoshop Levels file. These are not viewable images but purely mathematical instruction sets (settings) used to adjust the brightness, contrast, and tonal range of an existing image.
Users often discover .alv files hoping to see a photo, only to find they cannot be opened by standard viewers like Windows Photos or Mac Preview. Because the file contains only input/output coordinate data (0-255) for RGB channels, it has no visual content on its own. It is a proprietary legacy format, largely superseded by Adjustment Layers and LUTs in modern workflows.
To make this file useful, you typically have two goals:
1. View the Effect: You must load the file into Adobe Photoshop (Image > Adjustments > Levels > Load Preset) and apply it to a base image. You can then save the result as a standard JPG, PNG, or TIFF.
2. Universal Use (Video/3D): For use in video editors like DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro, the best workflow is to convert the Levels preset into a 3D LUT (Look Up Table). This typically involves applying the .alv to a neutral "identity" pattern and saving it as a CUBE file.
A significant minority of .alv files are Well Log Data files generated by Landmark Graphics ALog software. These contain geophysical measurements from boreholes. To use this data in Microsoft Excel or modern geological software, they should be converted to CSV, LAS (Log ASCII Standard), or XLSX formats.
