An .ALV file is primarily an Adobe Photoshop Levels File. It saves specific tonal adjustment settings (shadows, midtones, and highlights) created in the Levels dialog box of Adobe Photoshop. Professional editors use these presets to apply identical lighting corrections across large batches of photos. A secondary, rarer use of the .ALV extension is as a Well Log Data File utilized by Landmark Graphics ALog software to store geological drilling data.
The main disadvantage of the .ALV format is that it is a highly proprietary settings file. It requires an expensive, active subscription to Adobe software to utilize. It is also a frequent source of confusion because users mistakenly assume the file contains an actual image. It does not; it only contains numerical adjustment parameters. Standard web browsers and basic image viewers cannot open or preview these files.
Because an .ALV file does not contain raster or vector graphics, converting it directly into an image format like JPG or PNG is impossible. The original software is required to read the settings and apply them to an actual image. This is a closed, proprietary format. Standard online converters fail to process it because they look for image data that simply is not there.
