About ALIAS files
A .alias file is most frequently a macOS file system alias - a small shortcut file created by the Finder to point to another document, folder, or application. Think of it as the Mac equivalent of a Windows LNK shortcut. Users often encounter these when a Mac user mistakenly emails a shortcut (e.g., "Presentation.alias") instead of the actual file (e.g., "Presentation.pptx").
Because the .alias file contains only reference data (volume mounting info, directory IDs, and file paths) and not the actual content, it cannot be "converted" into a document or image in the traditional sense. Opening it on Windows or Linux usually results in an error or a display of gibberish binary code. The practical solution is to inspect the .alias file to identify the original file path, then request the actual file from the sender.
Less commonly, a .alias file may be a plain text configuration file used by the IANA Time Zone Database or command-line shells (like Bash or Zsh) to define short names for commands. These specific variants are plain text and can be safely converted to TXT or opened in any text editor like Notepad++ or Sublime Text.

The ALIAS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ALIAS converter.
