About ALIAS files
A .alias file primarily functions as a file system shortcut in Apple macOS, or as a bookmark within Apple Books. It acts as a lightweight pointer to an original file, folder, or application, preventing the need to duplicate large files. A smaller percentage of these files (around 6%) belong to the IANA Time Zone Database, where they store plain text definitions that map legacy time zone names to modern equivalents.
The biggest disadvantage of macOS .alias files is their proprietary nature. They are practically useless on Windows or Linux operating systems. A common mistake users make is emailing an alias instead of the actual file; the recipient only gets a broken link of a few kilobytes. Furthermore, reading the internal target path of a broken Mac alias requires hex editors or forensic tools.
Since a .alias shortcut contains no actual media or document data, you cannot convert it into a PDF, image, or video. You must find the source file to share the content. However, you can extract the metadata - such as the hard drive path it points to - by converting the file to TXT or JSON. For IANA time zone aliases, converting them to structured CSV or JSON makes the data easy to parse for developers. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The ALIAS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ALIAS converter.
