A .ALI file primarily functions in two completely unrelated ways: as a Protein Sequence Alignment file for MODELLER and 3D-JIGSAW bioinformatics software, or as an ABAP List Output generated by SAP ERP. Less commonly, it acts as an index file for Microsoft Dynamics AX or an Alias file for Adobe RoboHelp.
The main disadvantage of the .ALI format is its extreme context dependency. Without knowing the source system, users cannot easily parse the data. In bioinformatics, it acts as a modified PIR format that is not always accepted by standard genome viewers. In the SAP ecosystem, it represents raw print spool data that lacks modern formatting, making it difficult to share with non-SAP users or open on mobile devices.
For bioinformatics data, converting .ALI to FASTA or TXT makes it compatible with generic sequence analysis tools. For SAP ABAP outputs, converting to CSV, XLSX, or PDF is essential for business reporting and readable sharing. Be aware that converting SAP spools outside the native environment may drop specific print formatting tags.
