Extract text from Aldfaer genealogy files (ALDF)

An .ALDF file is the default database format used by Aldfaer, a popular, free Dutch genealogy software program. It stores comprehensive family tree data, including ancestral relationships, birth and death dates, marriage records, notes, and references to media files.
A key limitation of the .ALDF format is that it is a closed, proprietary database. Because the software is heavily localized and historically Windows-only, users often find their family history locked into an isolated ecosystem. These files cannot be natively read by web browsers, text editors, or modern, mainstream genealogy platforms like Ancestry or MyHeritage. Furthermore, as the database grows, the native software is known to run out of memory or crash during export operations.
To free your genealogy data, you must convert the .ALDF file to a universal format. The absolute best target is the GED (GEDCOM) file, which allows seamless migration to modern tools like Family Tree Maker or Gramps. If you only need to share information with relatives, exporting to PDF or CSV is highly recommended. Be aware that moving from a custom database to the rigid GEDCOM standard may result in broken media links or lost proprietary formatting.
Standard online converters fail to process .ALDF files because they lack the complex database schema parsers needed to reconstruct the family tree logic. Most generic tools simply see an unreadable binary blob.
