About AFC files

The .afc file extension serves as a proprietary Game Multimedia Container, primarily used to store streamed audio and video assets in console and PC games. It is most famously associated with Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 (developed by Electronic Arts) for storing background music and dialogue, as well as various PlayStation and Nintendo GameCube titles where it acts as a movie or audio stream container. Unlike standard MP3 or WAV files, .afc files use specialized compression (often ADPCM or encapsulated Vorbis) optimized for hardware streaming, making them unreadable by standard media players like Windows Media Player. Users typically encounter these files when attempting to extract game soundtracks or cutscenes. To listen to or edit these files, they must be converted to standard formats like WAV (for editing) or MP3 (for listening). A secondary, less common use (approx. 10%) is for Algorithm Flowcharts in specialized engineering software.
