About AD2 files

The .ad2 file extension typically serves one of two distinct purposes: it is either a proprietary animation project file created by mobile apps like FlipaClip and Kdan Animation Desk, or a segmented forensic disk image generated by AccessData FTK Imager (now owned by Exterro). Occasionally, it is used as an insurance claimant address data file by Applied Systems. Animation designers use .ad2 files to save multi-layered drawing projects, timelines, and audio tracks. Digital forensic investigators use the extension for the second chunk of a massive, mathematically verified hard drive clone (where the first chunk is ad1, the third is .ad3, etc.).

The fundamental disadvantage of the .ad2 animation format is that it is a closed, app-specific container. You cannot open it natively in desktop operating systems or web browsers without the original software. Forensic .ad2 files present an entirely different problem: they are heavily segmented, useless without the primary ad1 file, and require heavy, specialized forensic suites to mount or read.

Users typically want to convert animation .ad2 files into universal video formats like MP4, GIF, or MOV to share on social media. For forensic files, conversion is rarely the goal; instead, users extract the raw files inside the mounted image. Standard online video converters completely fail to process .ad2 animation files because they are not actually videos - under the hood, they are often structured ZIP archives containing raw PNG frames and proprietary JSON data.

Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Because this is a proprietary format, our analysis engine will scan the file signature to determine if it is a multi-part forensic image or an animation archive. If we detect a supported underlying embedded format, like standard ZIP compression, viewing internal assets or extracting the raw frames and audio tracks may still be possible without the original mobile app.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AD2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AD1, FC, YPF and 100 files.
