About ACORN files
The .acorn file is a layered image project file created exclusively by Acorn, a popular macOS image editor developed by Flying Meat. It stores unflattened image data, including raster layers, text layers, vector shapes, masks, and non-destructive filters. Under the hood, modern .acorn files are structured as SQLite databases. This allows the application to efficiently read and write large image projects by loading only the necessary parts into memory.
The main disadvantage of the .acorn format is its lack of portability. It is a highly proprietary, macOS-only format. You cannot open it natively on Windows or Linux, and web browsers cannot display it. Sending an .acorn file to a client or colleague guarantees they will not be able to view it unless they own a Mac and purchase an Acorn license. Furthermore, because these files store full-resolution layers and history, they often exceed 100MB in size, making them difficult to share via email.
To share your work, you must convert the .acorn file. The best target formats are PNG or JPG for flattened web viewing, or PSD (Adobe Photoshop Document) if the recipient needs to retain layer structure and edit the file further.
Because the .acorn format is actually a complex, closed SQLite database, standard online image converters almost always fail to process it. Usually, only the original Acorn software can properly parse the layer data and export the image perfectly. However, just drag and drop your file on convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects standard embedded image data inside the SQLite structure, viewing or basic conversion may still be possible.

The ACORN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACORN converter.
