About ACORN files
The .acorn file extension represents a proprietary image project created by Acorn, a popular image editor for macOS developed by Flying Meat. Functionally similar to a PSD file from Adobe Photoshop, an .acorn file stores the complete state of an editing session, including multiple raster and vector layers, editable text, layer masks, non-destructive filters, and blend modes.
While Acorn files are excellent for preserving editing capabilities on a Mac, they present significant compatibility challenges for cross-platform sharing. The format is exclusive to macOS, meaning users on Windows, Linux, or Android cannot natively open or view these files. A unique technical quirk of the format is that modern .acorn files are actually SQLite databases disguised as image files, used to store layer data and metadata efficiently. However, this internal structure is not readable by standard image viewers. To share these designs with clients or non-Mac users, it is essential to convert them into universally compatible formats like JPG or PNG for viewing, or PSD and PDF to retain some editing structure and vector data.

The ACORN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACORN converter.
