About A4R files
The .A4R extension is a legacy artifact primarily associated with Macromedia Authorware 4, a once-dominant tool for creating interactive e-learning and multimedia courseware. These files are 'packaged' content libraries containing graphics, text, and logic designed to run on Windows 95/98-era systems. Because Authorware was acquired by Adobe and subsequently discontinued, .A4R files are effectively 'digital fossils.' They cannot be opened by modern web browsers or standard media players, and the original runtime software is no longer sold or supported on Windows 10/11. A secondary, less common use of this extension is for A4Record presentation files, which are proprietary screen recordings.
For users holding these files, the primary catch is obsolescence. The practical solution for preservation is not a direct file-to-file conversion (which is often impossible due to the interactive scripts inside), but rather emulation and capture. To convert these for modern viewing, users typically must run the file in a virtualization environment (like VMware) and use screen recording software to save the output as MP4 or AVI. For static assets, specialized unpackers may extract BMP images or WAV audio, but the interactive structure will be lost.
Convert.Guru analyzes your A4R file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert A4R file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Adobe Authorware or similar software from the "Legacy Interactive Courseware" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to A4R, try Adobe Authorware or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Interactive Courseware" category.
The A4R Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our A4R converter.
