About 3FS files

A .3fs file is an Ext3 filesystem image utilized by Puppy Linux as a Save State file. Because Puppy Linux runs primarily in RAM, it requires a persistent storage file to save system configurations, installed software, and user data between reboots.

To interact with .3fs files natively, you must use a Linux environment that supports the Ext3 filesystem. On Windows machines, users typically rely on extraction utilities like 7-Zip or specialized mounting drivers like Ext2Fsd to read the contents.

The format presents several major disadvantages for regular users. It is a raw block-level disk image, meaning files easily exceed several gigabytes in size. Attempting to mount an Ext3 image on Windows or macOS is notoriously unstable and often requires read-only access to prevent total data corruption. If a Linux session crashes, the internal Ext3 journal can break, rendering the entire backup unreadable.

Converting a .3fs file usually involves extracting its contents rather than changing the file itself. The best targets are archive formats like TAR or ZIP for cross-platform access, or migrating the filesystem to a modern 4FS (Ext4) format.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to convert online. Standard web converters fail because they expect document or media formats, not a raw Linux filesystem partition. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or partial extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your 3FS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
