A .2D file is a computer-aided design (CAD) document that stores two-dimensional drawings, floor plans, schematics, or mechanical drafts. Because the .2D extension is claimed by multiple competing software vendors, its internal structure varies wildly. It is most commonly associated with VersaCAD, but it is also utilized by Nemetschek Allplan, QCAD, and Cadwork.
This extreme fragmentation is the primary disadvantage of the .2D format. You cannot simply double-click the file and expect it to open unless you have the exact proprietary software that originally created it. Some variations are closed binary formats, Allplan uses a standard ZIP container, and QCAD relies on an XML-based structure. Furthermore, long-term archiving is risky due to vendor lock-in and a lack of standardized documentation.
