About ZS6 files

.ZS6 files are save states generated by the ZSNES Super Nintendo emulator, explicitly occupying save slot number 6. They capture an exact snapshot of the emulated console's RAM, VRAM, and CPU registers at a specific frame of gameplay. To open or interact with these files natively, users require ZSNES running on Windows, Linux, or DOS.

Users frequently attempt to convert .ZS6 files when migrating their retro gaming setup to mobile devices, modern frontends like RetroArch, or other emulators like Snes9x. The immediate disadvantage of the .ZS6 format is that it is heavily proprietary and entirely dependent on the specific ZSNES emulator version and exact ROM dump. It is an architecture-specific memory dump, not a cross-compatible data structure, making it impossible to read with standard media or text viewers.

Direct conversion to other savestate formats is typically impossible. The best conversion target is an SRM (Battery Save) format. To achieve this, you must load the .ZS6 state in ZSNES, perform a standard in-game save, and use the resulting SRM file, which loses the exact 'save anywhere' position but guarantees universal compatibility across different emulators.

Because this file format is a closed, proprietary snapshot of emulator memory, standard online converters fail to process it. It is difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can inspect the file and show its internal hex content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZS6 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZST, CHT and ZMV files.
