About ZS3 files
The .zs3 file is a save state created by the ZSNES Super Nintendo emulator. Specifically, it occupies save slot 3. It captures the exact memory, processor, and audio state of the emulated SNES console at a specific frame, allowing players to resume gameplay instantly. This file is exclusively opened by ZSNES, a popular but legacy emulator documented on Wikipedia. Users frequently need to convert this file when migrating to modern, more accurate emulators like RetroArch or Snes9x. However, the .zs3 format is highly proprietary and fundamentally disadvantaged because save states are hardware-specific binary dumps. They lack the standard structure of a normal battery save and frequently break even between minor version updates of the same emulator. The best conversion target is a standard srm (SRAM) file. To achieve this, load the .zs3 state in ZSNES, use the native in-game save system, and export the resulting srm file which is universally supported. Because this is a closed, proprietary format heavily tied to legacy emulator architecture, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the emulated data.
