About ZM1 files
A .zm1 file serves two completely different purposes depending on its origin. It is either a ZoneAlarm Renamed MDA file or a ZSNES Movie #1 file.
When used by ZoneAlarm, its Mailsafe security feature automatically renames incoming Microsoft Access Add-in files (MDA) to .zm1. This is a hardcoded security mechanism designed to stop users from accidentally executing potentially harmful database scripts attached to emails. To access the file, users must manually verify its safety and rename the extension back to .MDA.
In the gaming context, the ZSNES Super Nintendo emulator uses the .zm1 format to store the first recorded gameplay replay. Subsequent recordings are saved as ZM2, ZM3, and so on. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it is strictly proprietary and tightly bound to the exact ROM and emulator version used during recording. It does not contain actual video data; it only logs controller inputs.
Users often mistakenly try to convert a ZSNES .zm1 to standard video formats like MP4 or AVI. Standard online converters will fail completely because there are no video frames to convert. To create an MP4, the only workaround is to play the .zm1 file inside the emulator and capture the screen using third-party recording software. For ZoneAlarm files, conversion isn't necessary - just a manual rename.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard software cannot parse renamed databases or emulator scripts. Our engine will identify the underlying hexadecimal signature, view the text or internal content, and tell you exactly what you are dealing with. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format, extraction or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZM1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ZM1 file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use ZoneAlarm or similar software from the "Emulator Replay or Quarantined File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to ZM1, try ZoneAlarm or another comparable tool in the "Emulator Replay or Quarantined File" category.
The ZM1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZM1 converter.
