About YMP files

A .YMP file is a specialized "One Click Install" instruction set primarily used by the openSUSE operating system. It acts as a bridge between a web browser and the YaST package manager, containing a list of software repositories and package names in a standard XML structure.

The Problem: Users often download .YMP files expecting a standalone installer like an EXE or DMG, only to find the file is non-functional on Windows, macOS, or non-SUSE Linux distributions (like Ubuntu or Fedora). Because the file relies entirely on the YaST Meta Package Handler to execute, it is effectively a "dead" file on any other system. It does not contain the actual software binary, merely the instructions on where to find it.

The Solution: While you cannot "run" a .YMP file outside of openSUSE, you can convert it to readable formats like TXT, XML, or JSON. Converting the file allows you to audit the content - specifically to extract the Repository URLs and Package Names. This is critical for security verification (ensuring the source is trusted) or for manually locating the software packages (RPMs) if you are trying to install the application on a different Linux distribution.

Convert.Guru analyzes your YMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XSPF, GLADE and LTE files.

The YMP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our YMP converter.
