Extract text from YSFLIGHT mission files (YFS)

The .yfs file is a proprietary mission and scenario file used exclusively by YSFLIGHT, a lightweight, free flight simulator. These files store crucial simulation parameters, including initial aircraft coordinates, weather conditions, weapon loadouts, and artificial intelligence (AI) flight paths.
The major disadvantage of the .yfs format is its rigid, proprietary nature. The data is completely locked to the older YSFLIGHT game engine. It is impossible to directly export or import these flight scenarios into modern software like Microsoft Flight Simulator or X-Plane. Because of these limits, users who want to analyze mission data outside the game are severely restricted.
If you need to extract the data, your best target format is TXT. Because some game files use simple markup, a basic text conversion allows you to read the underlying coordinates and settings. However, converting these coordinates into standard mapping formats like GPX will usually result in data loss or require manual scripting.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it lacks widespread documentation and is built entirely for a niche simulation engine. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail because they cannot parse the unique schema.
