About YAODL files
The .YAODL file is a legacy PowerFlip 3D Image File originally created by Silicon Graphics. It is used to store 3D model geometry, textures, or rendered raster images for SGI IRIX workstation environments.
Historically, these files were opened and managed using SGI's internal PowerFlip utility. Today, you cannot open a .YAODL file natively on Windows, macOS, or Linux. The format is a closed, undocumented binary. It requires specialized emulation of IRIX systems or custom reverse-engineering scripts to access the raw data.
Users need to convert this file because modern 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya do not support it. It is entirely obsolete. The best conversion targets for 3D preservation are standard formats like OBJ or STL. If the file contains a 2D snapshot, converting to PNG or JPG is ideal. Note that proprietary SGI shaders, materials, and animations are almost always lost during conversion.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because the original software is defunct and the data structure is closed. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the specific decoders for 90s-era SGI formats. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your YAODL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The YAODL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our YAODL converter.
