About XYZI files

The .XYZI file extension represents a specific type of 3D point cloud data that stores four values per point: spatial coordinates (X, Y, Z) and an intensity value (I). This format is most commonly associated with industrial sensors from wenglor (specifically the weCat3D series) and surveying software like Topcon MAGNET Collage. While the data itself is critical for quality control, reverse engineering, and topographic mapping, the format creates significant workflow friction. It is often a raw dump from the sensor or a proprietary binary structure, meaning standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or Revit cannot import it directly. Users frequently find themselves locked out of their own data without the specific vendor suite installed, which can cost thousands in licensing fees. To make this data usable in broader engineering or visualization workflows, the best practice is to convert .XYZI files to industry-standard formats. For GIS and archiving, convert to LAS or compressed LAZ. For academic or simple visualization tasks, PLY or TXT are preferred. If you need to manipulate the geometry in mesh-based software like Blender, you will first need to convert the point cloud to a mesh format like STL or OBJ.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XYZI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XYZI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XYZI converter.
