A .xwf file is an OmniPage Workflow File developed by Nuance Communications (now managed by Tungsten Automation). It acts as an automation script that stores a sequence of tasks for OmniPage OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. These workflows dictate how documents are scanned, recognized, formatted, and saved.
The primary software used to open and execute these files is OmniPage. Users rely on this format to automate repetitive data extraction processes across large batches of scanned images.
The major disadvantage of the .xwf format is its strictly proprietary nature. It requires an expensive software license to execute and cannot be opened by standard web browsers or text editors. Furthermore, users often mistakenly believe the file contains their scanned document, when in reality, it only holds the automation instructions.
