About XTBL files

A .xtbl file is a document, image, or database that has been maliciously encrypted by the CrySis or Dharma ransomware families. This is not a standard file format used for daily work. Instead, it is the direct result of a cyberattack. Victims typically encounter these files when they find their local or network drives locked, often with an attacker's email address injected into the file name.

To restore the file, victims need specific decryption software like RakhniDecryptor by Kaspersky or similar free tools provided by the No More Ransom initiative. You can read more about how these attacks function on the Ransomware Wikipedia page.

Users need to convert .xtbl files to recover their original business or personal data. The absolute disadvantage of this format is that your original data is locked behind strong military-grade encryption (such as AES or RSA). The file is completely unreadable. Renaming the extension back to its original name (like DOCX or JPG) will not work because the underlying binary data remains scrambled.

The ideal target format for an .xtbl file is simply its original format before the infection. Standard online converters always fail to process these files because they cannot bypass the cryptographic locks.

This file format is incredibly difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, hostile encryption scheme designed to extort money. Only the original attackers, or specialized cybersecurity decryption tools possessing the correct private key, can properly read or export the data back to normal. If our analysis detects a supported underlying structure or an older ransomware variant with known flaws, identifying the original file content may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XTBL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XTBL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XTBL converter.
