About XPDL files

.XPDL files store XML Process Definition Language data, originally standardized by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC). These files are used to exchange complex business process definitions, routing logic, and workflow models between different Business Process Management (BPM) systems. Typical enterprise software used to manage this format includes Bizagi Modeler and TIBCO.

While an .XPDL file is technically built on XML, it poses significant reading challenges. Opening the file without a dedicated BPM engine simply exposes thousands of lines of unreadable schema code. Furthermore, different vendors often inject proprietary tags and extensions into the code. This means the visual flowchart often breaks, loses routing arrows, or drops layout coordinates when transferred between rival software systems. Stakeholders cannot easily review the processes without installing heavy, specialized desktop modeling tools.

To safely share business processes, you should convert .XPDL to highly accessible visual targets like PDF or PNG. If you need to migrate the logic to a newer workflow engine, converting to the modern BPMN standard is your best option. Because interpreting the file requires plotting exact graphical coordinates, standard online converters often fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view the internal text structure, and convert it when possible on convert.guru.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XPDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BPMN, XML, BPM, PDF, XFDL, HIF, MP4 and TSX files.

The XPDL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XPDL converter.
