About XP4 files
.XP4 files are highly specialized archive containers used by the KiriKiri visual novel scripting engine. Functioning similarly to standard ZIP files but built for proprietary game software, these packages store all essential game assets - such as character sprites, background images, voice audio, and text scripts - in a single compressed file. They are predominantly found in Japanese visual novels and doujin games.
A significant limitation of the .XP4 format is its proprietary and closed nature. Standard archive extraction tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip cannot read these files because developers frequently implement custom encryption layers, obfuscation, or proprietary headers to protect their game assets from piracy or unauthorized modification. Users typically need to extract these archives to access the raw data for translation, modding, or archival purposes, requiring specialized community-built extraction software like GARbro or krkrExtract.
The ultimate goal of converting or unpacking an .XP4 file is usually to extract standard formats like ZIP for the full archive, or individual raw assets such as PNG or JPG for images, and OGG or WAV for audio. However, you should be aware that internal image formats might be stored as proprietary TLG files, and scripts may remain in compiled formats that require further decoding.
Because of the custom encryption used on a game-by-game basis, standard online converters universally fail to process these packages. We can identify the file format, inspect the underlying container structure, and attempt to reveal internal headers, text, or embedded assets. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XP4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
