About XP2 files

An .XP2 file is a game map data file used by XPilot NG, a long-running, open-source 2D space combat game. It stores the exact coordinates of 2D polygons that define map obstacles, items, walls, and spawn points.

Unlike the older, unstructured .XP files, .XP2 shifted to use standard XML formatting. Despite this structured approach, an .XP2 file remains highly specialized. Because the map elements are designed exclusively for the XPilot NG engine, standard web browsers or image viewers cannot display them. Without the game installed, users are stuck with an unrecognizable file.

The best conversion targets for an .XP2 file are code-friendly formats like XML, TXT, or JSON. This lets developers or modders safely read and edit the map coordinates. Note that converting .XP2 directly to an image format like .JPG is almost impossible because standard converters do not contain the game's rendering engine.

Most generic online converters fail to process game asset files because they expect standard documents or media.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XP2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
